Last semester for my final in Typography One we have to do a collection of sixty two pictograms depicting the history of visual design. I was thrilled with the project even though I found it challenging. We were to take complex images and strip them down to simple illustrations. Minimal design is my bread and butter. I finished my pictograms, felt accomplished, but as time past I found them sitting on my computer and I couldn’t figure out what to do with them.
Then one night I couldn’t sleep - all my great ideas come to me this way - and I thought of doing a poster series called ‘Eras in Art History.’ I would use some of the pictograms I did in class and couple them with a cute phrase while giving the whole thing a retro advertisement feel. I started with this:

I felt they needed to be cleaned up a bit and given a little more pizzazz. Here is the work in progress for several of the pieces:

Then I coupled the pieces with cute sayings such as:

I still feel that the pieces need a little extra something, but I have yet to pinpoint it. Suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

Last year while I was sitting in my Art History class, I found myself drawing swirls all over my notebook. Granted, I should have been paying attention to the art of the Easter Islands, or whatever it was we were learning, but I found myself obsessed with drawing swirls. This past semester, I had a wonderful printmaking teacher who gave us a lot of room to bring out own artistic visions to the projects we were doing. Around the second or third project of the semester, we got to make stamps and one of the first thoughts that came to my mind was swirls.

See I told you I was obsessed.

Welcome to Crumness. The name is nonsense really. I made it up and I think it means something wonderful, but I’m not sure what that is yet. I decided it was well overdue that I made a blog to share my art with the world, along with my thoughts, theories, and design sense. I intend on sharing resources for the beginning designer, tips and tricks, and inspiration from around the web and world.
I’m very excited about 2011 because I feel like I’m on my way to understanding myself as a designer and pushing the limits on what I am capable of. I had some wonderful clients in 2010 through my freelance business Three Squared. I’m excited to see what 2011 brings. Right now, I’m drawing inspiration from street art. I watched the documentaries “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and “Bomb It” recently and was really impressed with the Street Art out there. Banksy, obviously, is one of the leaders and I love his stuff.

One of my goals this year is to look for inspiration everywhere, not just places like The Design Inspiration or Unmatched Style. Don’t get me wrong, these are wonderful sites, but sometimes it pays to step out into the world and find something new and interesting. It’s kind of like Banksy, but not really. If that makes any sense at all.

This year I didn’t have enough money to buy my friends and family gifts (that whole being a poor college student thing) so I was racking my brain about what I could give them for little to no money. I love to buy magnets and litter my fridge with them. Everytime my husband and I got to Hasting’s we try to pick out a quirky magnet. While walking past my fridge one night I thought, hey I can make magnets too.

So I decided to paint magnets for my family. I really enjoyed it, and plan on making more next year. It was a blast to do and wasn’t as tedious as painting a large canvas or braced panel. Oh and the magnets were a hit.
